New York Mets remove Jason Bay from roster as they send him into free agency - MLB Update
The disappointed performance in 2012 regular season by outfielder Jason Bay has resulted into a premature expiry of his contract with New York Mets. Throughout the season, Bay failed to produce hits and consistent shows at the plate. To make matters worse,
injuries sapped his ability to perform at potential.
As soon as the offseason began, it was expected that the Mets will find a way out to get rid of Bay from their roster.
Bay’s existing contract ensured him a huge amount of yearly salary, making him one of the overpaid players in the Major League Baseball. His offensive numbers did not justify with the sum he fetched from the club every year.
It can be speculated that the money that the Mets now save from Bay’s exclusion allows them to spend it on other areas, for example for offering contract extensions to their All-Star third baseman David Wright and the starting pitcher R.A. Dickey.
Talking about the termination of the contract of Bay, Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson stated that he tried his best to serve the club but he could not deliver. He thanked Bay for staying with the club. At the same time, he appreciated his discipline.
"Jason has a tremendous work ethic. There was never any question about it. Unfortunately, the results weren't there and we are in a results-oriented business. We thank Jason for his efforts and wish him well," Alderson said.
Bay is not frustrated after being disallowed to collect a sufficient salary every year. Instead, he has shown the resolve to rebound and prove his mettle in the upcoming seasons.
He is hopeful that some of the organisations will unveil their interest in acquiring him and somehow he will be able to find a place in the Major League again.
"I still feel I have plenty to give to this game and that I can play baseball at a high level. But after serious consideration, both sides agree that we would benefit from a fresh start," Bay said. "I'm grateful we were able to reach an agreement to allow
that to happen."
Bay will be looking to sign a new deal in the offseason so that he can prepare for the upcoming season.
