New York Mets seek Geovany Soto from Chicago Cubs but deal unlikely - MLB Update
The reports claim that the New York Mets have sought Geovany Soto, the catcher with the Chicago Cubs. Before this attempt, they have also negotiated with the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies for acquiring the catchers, Kelly Shoppach and Ramon Hernandez,
from the former and the latter respectively. However, the talks have failed due to their inability to reach a mutually acceptable price of the deal.
The Mets are rigorously planning for the future. Although they have no issue with their current catcher Josh Thole, they just want to revamp the roster in such a manner that in case the need for replacement arises, they will have reliable options available.
Their chances this year for winning the play-off spot are slim as can be understood from the number of matches they have won thus far in the season. Their gap with the team which holds second position on the table is widening after every passing day.
If their performance in the last few series is anything to go by, they are fast heading toward the lowest position on the Division table. This is more so in light of the fact that the difference between the lowest club on the table and the Mets in terms
of wins is not big. Therefore, there is every possibility that if they do not build winning streaks, the worst case scenario awaits them.
The dismal position on the table has convinced the management that they are better off thinking prospectively. Therefore, the Mets have initiated the hunt for better prospects.
The catching department has grabbed the attention of the management first of all.
Unfortunately, they have yet not been able to clinch any deal in this regard. With the trade deadline around the corner, they will be expediting the process of negotiations if they earnestly aim to restructure their roster before the end of this season.
More likely, the trade will not take place, in light of the fact that the Mets are reluctant to agree on the price which is to be paid in the deal. Therefore, one can expect that they will look for the catchers after this season.
Regardless of this, it will be interesting to see how the Mets perform in their upcoming series in order to improve their winning percentage.
