New York Mets spread out a part of David Wright salary over latter years of his contract-MLB
According to multiple sources, David Wright will not exactly earn $138 million in real terms. Even as this amount is mentioned in his contract, the element of deferment is going to render the actual value of the agreement a little less.
The Mets have deducted a slight portion of his salary for the first few years in the beginning of the contract. They have promised to include this amount in his salary during the last few seasons before the expiry of the agreement.
Initially, Wright was reluctant to accept this. He was even ready to put halt to the negotiations and start thinking other options, according to the sources.
Thanks to the immediate concessions decided by the Mets for him, the talks resumed the usual course.
The Mets had to reduce the amount of deferment in order to make Wright accept the offer and sign the contract.
Wright is happy with the current modalities of the deal, even if they are not the ideal for him in some ways. A couple of days ago, Wright talked before the media and expressed how much it means to him playing for the Mets.
“I never wanted to put a doubt in anyone’s mind that this is where I wanted to be. I never wanted to put another uniform on, and I’m happy I’m wearing this one. To me there was no thought of putting on another uniform,” Wright said.
Wright has played his entire career with New York. The face of the franchise, he boasts an amazing offensive record and holds the distinction of being all time leader of the club in certain categories.
While he has earned the contract extension, his teammate, R.A Dickey awaits the response from the club as yet.
Dickey, just like Wright, was an incredible source of help for the club during the last season.
He won Cy Young Award, apart from other laurels. By many ways, the Mets owe their first half of the season success during 2012 to him.
Wright will be trying to justify his expensive deal through consistent shows during the upcoming season.
Similarly, fans will be looking forward to see him achieve heights of success down the road.
