New York Mets’ starter Dillon Gee goes through surgery to break blood clot in right shoulder - MLB
The New York Mets will be announcing a replacement for starting the Friday game, as the scheduled pitcher Dillon Gee undergoes surgery and is hospitalised. Soon, Gee will be put on the disabled list, as per reports.
Meanwhile, Doctors used a catheter to remove the fluid from his artery, which was causing his fingers to not work properly. Furthermore, it will take some time before Gee can recover completely.
Gee was troubled by his movements in the last few days and was unable to throw the way he would want. Due to this, he was taken to the hospital for testing. As soon as the initial examination revealed a blood clot in his artery, surgery was conducted.
As of now, he remains in the hospital and will not be discharged until the doctor allows it.
This immediately puts Mets’ management into consultation over possible replacements. Since after the All-Star break winning Friday’s match is going to play an important role for their momentum ahead as they will be pondering over various options with regards
to pitching.
Meanwhile, Mets’ manager Terry Collins considers the injury a huge setback. He stated that losing a pitcher who was throwing extremely well in the season is not a good sign for the club. Further, he explained that while they had found a reliable replacement
in the case of injury by Mike Pelfrey, this time it is going to be a tough ask.
"It's very shocking,'' Collins said."The one thing we said from the beginning is, 'We have to keep our rotation intact.' When we lost [Mike Pelfrey], we were fortunate that we had Chris Young coming. But this is a big piece, because Dillon Gee was pitching
good, really good. We've got a big hole to fill right now.''
In light of this, Mets cannot afford Gee to stay out for a long time-period. The performance the club has put up thus far is prone to be wasted away in case their rotation lacks depth in the next half of the season.
They currently rank third on the National League East Division table. Therefore, their first goal in the second half will be to occupy the second spot, taking it from the Atlanta Braves.
Meeting this in the absence of Gee is going to a challenge for the Mets.
