New York Mets suffer 3-6 defeat by Cincinnati Reds as their bullpen crumbles - MLB Update
Johan Santana’s fine outing on the mound goes to waste as the New York Mets lose to Cincinnati Reds 3-6 at Citi Field, New York, NY on May 16, 2012 in first game of the two match series.
In a rare display of struggle on the plate, the Mets' third baseman David Wright was hitless. While he drew two walks, he was unable to make anything of the two at-bats he faced. His batting average is still more than .400.
After being unable to make the most of his at-bats, Andres Torres was sent as a pinch hitter. The result did not change as he went hitless again.
Mets moved their centre fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis back to his earlier position in the line-up. He connected one hit in four at-bats, but it was of little significance to the Mets.
Until half way through the game the Mets were ahead and were well on their way to record victory. Before start of the eighth, the Mets had a one run lead.
It was top of the eighth that the whole complexion of the game changed.
Relief pitcher Jon Rauch will not throw if he knew how disastrous he is going to be for his side.
He not only blew the lead, as he allowed the Reds reach such position in the match from where it will be extremely tough for the Mets to launch recovery.
By giving up three runs in little less than one inning, he permitted the Reds to gain a two run lead. As he was immediately taken off the mound, Tim Byrdak replaced him.
Meanwhile, none of the Mets’ hitters managed to up the ante and launch endeavour toward restoring the lead.
Sean Marshall had patience to absorb pressure and throw a scoreless ninth inning for the Reds. As he gave up one hit and struck out one, as he did not allow the Mets to come back in the game.
Bullpen has started exposing its volatility. Especially in last few games, their relievers have been ineffective in blocking hits.
This can easily become their malaise and can derail the Mets from their present success in the season.
