New York Mets sweep Philadelphia Phillies first time since 2006 at Citizens Bank Park-MLB Update
Realities are changing for the Philadelphia Phillies. The team will otherwise find as a source of opportunity for building up strong winning streaks is challenging them big-time in the season.
The New York Mets has not recorded a sweep against them after 2006. This duration is long enough to suggest traditional dominance of the Phillies on them.
Phillies are at their lowest ebb at the moment. From their current standings on the table, it looks the Phillies will find it hard to defend their last year Division Championship.
Their relievers are being easily roughed up and hitters are struggling against the quality pitches. In the process, their starters, who can be easily among the best in baseball at the moment, have also lost the way.
Interestingly enough, the Mets registered sweep using players who were not part of club in 2006. Only David Wright was in the line-up back then.
This highlights the kind of effective restructuring of the team, as the Mets have managed since then.
Not trying to be proud full of a history-making sweep by his side more than necessary, Wright uttered that it is just a matter of momentum and exploiting weaknesses of opposition. The moment a team is successful in this, it dominates regardless of its strength
on paper.
"I don't think it's fair to stack up two teams over six games," Wright said. "It just depends on a lot of momentum. If you have that momentum, and a team is not playing well, you have to take advantage of that, and we've been able to do that."
Irrespective of how the Mets' management will perceive this, one thing this landmark achievement reveals that the club has come a long way from their earlier position.
Their hitters are competent and can send even best of the starters on knees on their day. Even the pitching department, which though has not been great in the past, is vastly improved now.
Phillies in the meantime have reversed. Without their premier hitters Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, they are hopelessly exposed.
How long the Mets can experience their dominance and how deep the Phillies can sink at maximum will be interesting to know as season unfolds ahead.
