New York Mets sweep double-header with 5-1 win over Florida Marlins – MLB Update
After a two-day playing gap at Citi Field in New York, NY due to Hurricane Irene, the New York Mets showed good form to defeat Florida Marlins 5-1 in the second-game of the double-header on Monday, August 29 after a comprehensive 2-1 win in the first-game.
Jose Reyes made a solid comeback to the side as he impressed on the plate as well as in the infield. The shortstop improved his batting average to .336 for the season when he scored in the seventh inning helped by David Wright’s RBI effort.
Dillon Gee impressed for the Mets as he threw six classic-innings for just one run to restrict the Marlins from obtaining any extra advantage. He struck-out six batters in the stretch where he threw a total of 101 pitches. Gee’s performance was sufficient
to give him his 12th win of the season with just five losses to accompany the wins.
The only run for the Marlins came in the sixth inning when a loose pitch from Gee was hammered to the right field by left-handed Greg Dobbs. This hit brought the Marlins at level with the Mets who scored their first run in the fourth inning when a throwing
error by Dobbs allowed Ruben Tejada to complete the first of his two-runs in the game.
In the sixth inning, Tejada guided the Mets to a one-run lead when Angel Pagan skilfully produced a single towards centre field before completing his own run in the subsequent play to give a solid two-run lead to the home side. The Mets continued to dominate
the Marlins by scoring runs at a continuous rate, scoring the fourth in the seventh inning and the fifth in the eighth inning. First baseman Nick Evans took his batting average to .300 after his run in the eighth inning.
Ricky Nolasco pitched into the seventh inning for the Marlins but lacked accuracy. In 6.2 innings, he gave away four runs amid nine hits and four errors to see his earned-run average creep up to 4.34 for the season. This was his tenth loss with just nine
wins thus far in the season.
