New York Mets sweep series as they win 10-6 against Philadelphia Phillies - MLB Update
Relief pitcher Kyle Kendrick melts down on the mound as the New York Mets draw five runs from him and win 10-6 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 9, 2012 in third game of the series.
After every game, the Mets are building on their previous performance. While their last game victory came through a tight late innings, this one was more convincing.
Mets began the game with two scoreless innings before tying the score in third. Late in the innings, the Mets went off to a bombastic up-surge that whatever little lead the Phillies maintained until six was trampled.
Centre fielder Andres Torres connected two hits in four at-bats and completed two runs.
Phillies’ fate was effectively put in the coffin when first baseman, Ike Davis struck a 429 feet three-run homer to right. Then the last nail in the coffin came from another homer in the next inning by Torres.
Dillon Gee was an exception in an all-out great performance by the whole team. In little more than five innings, he gave up 10 hits, conceded four runs and struck-out just four.
Tim Byrdak, who was introduced after Gee leaked runs, was scoreless in less than one inning.
This was one of the few games that saw Phillies being let down by their pitchers. Most of the time in the season, their starters have been spot on, whereas little run-support from the offence cost them the defeats.
Veteran centre-fielder, Shane Victorino was hitless in five at-bats. Although he is going reasonably well, he is far from justifying years of investment the Phillies made by keeping him in the side.
Right-fielder Hunter Pence was not as prolific as he has been in last few games, he did contribute one RBI, while tripling to deep centre. He went 1-for-5 and is hitting .262/.299/.492, a far better performance compared to other hitters in the line-up.
The Mets will like to see their offence keep stepping up the way they did in penultimate innings of the game.
Having the sluggers connecting clean in those innings is a huge plus with the Mets as they move forward in the season.
