New York Mets to request Major League Baseball to rule no-hitter game for R.A. Dickey - MLB
R.A. Dickey continues hoodwinking batters with his knuckle-ball. He finished an epic spell of a one-hit nine innings on Wednesday, against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mets’ manager Terry Collins believes that Dickey deserves a no-hitter ruling in the game. For this,
he announces that the team will lodge request to the Major League Baseball, calling for the change of one-hitter to no-hitter game for Dickey.
Substantiating the argument with the fact that since third baseman David Wright did not make a play and caused the hit as a result, it had nothing to do with anything with Dickey’s throw.
Dickey was going perfectly in the game. All of a sudden, one unearned run was given up. An otherwise impeccable spell of nine innings was tainted a little bit, as a result.
On seeing that Dickey was hitless for most part of the game, Mets were bracing for a rare no-hitter from their starter.
Their hopes switched off when the otherwise safe hands betrayed Wright at third-base and allowed the umpire to call it a hit for the Rays’ centre fielder B.J. Upton.
Notwithstanding with Mets’ penchant for drawing no-hitter from the starter, Dickey is aware of the fact that chances for the game being declared no-hitter by MLB are minimal. He agrees to a "Hail Mary" resemblance of his chances for such a ruling.
“A Hail Mary is a good analogy,” said Dickey. “It’s up to them. B.J. is quick, and I’ve seen David make that play a lot of times with his bare hand. You give him 10 times, he’s going to make it eight.”
Though Collins has made the decision to appeal, he also knows that MLB will most probably discard the request.
“We said in the ninth inning we’ve got to appeal that play,” Collins said. “We’re probably not going to win it but — David tried to (barehand it) and it’s B.J. running — but what the heck? What have you got to lose? If anyone deserved a no-hitter or a perfect
game, it was him.”
More than the ruling of a no-hitter game, what is important for Dickey is keeping his control at the same level and replicating the performance in upcoming games.
