New York Mets to talk to Jose Reyes’ agents – MLB News
The New York Mets’ general manager Sandy Alderson said on Thursday, December 1, that the team will now open the lines of communication with the agents of Jose Reyes, a free-agent shortstop of the team prior to the commencement of the
Winter Meetings.
With a whole variety of big names being in the list of free-agents, the market seems to have slowed down. As to which team aspires to get what player, there is only a string of speculations. Certainty, however, is something that can
barely be witnessed.
However, Alderson’s emphasis was that as the conversations shall open, he will also like to talk with the representatives of Jose Reyes.
"I certainly would hope that we'll have conversations. By the time we get to Dallas, or at Dallas," Alderson said. "I do expect to have them over the next handful of days."
It is worthwhile to recall that so far the biggest offer that has come Jose Reyes’ way is that of $90 million for six years, offered by Miami. Nonetheless, even those reports are unconfirmed as of yet. The report that the Philadelphia
Phillies also had shown their interest in signing a contract with the shortstop did not materialise in the end.
Since the market already has the big names like Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, the inclusion of Reyes makes it more exciting. While it is exciting, the amount of money involved in hiring these players is something that forces the
teams to think twice.
"There's just a general uncertainty about the marketplace and where values are," Alderson said. "It may have something to do with the top free agents not having moved -- [Albert] Pujols and [Prince] Fielder and Jose Reyes.”
What have affected Jose Reyes to some extent are the injuries that have had great impact on his market value as well. While the club will like to re-sign the player, it will be difficult for it to do given the offer he got of $90 million
by Miami. Whatever the ultimate decision the Mets hope it benefits both the player and the team.
