New York Mets trade Jefry Marte to Oakland Athletics for Collin Cowgill-MLB Update
Finally, the New York Mets fill their vacant outfield spot. They have given away their prospect, Jefry Marte to the Oakland Athletics for acquiring Collin Cowgill.
Ever since the start of the offseason, the Mets are looking for outfielders.
Owing to financial constraints, they cannot visit the free agent market.
One of the options before them was trading the Cy Young winner, R.A Dickey, and obtain some outfielders in return for him.
While they traded Dickey the other day, they did not find outfielders in the deal. Instead, some minor league catchers and a top pitching prospect were obtained.
In short, even the trade of Dickey has not helped them remove discrepancies on the roster.
Realising that free agents demand a huge amount of money, the Mets have struck a trade deal with the Athletics, which is a far cheaper option for them.
As far as the credentials of Cowgill are concerned, the Mets cannot pin high hopes on him.
Cowgill can perform well against the left handed pitchers only. His offensive stats against the right handed hurlers are extremely unimpressive.
Indeed, Cowgill cannot be expected to offset the impact of the absence of Scott Hairston.
Hairston was outstanding when he was given opportunities by the Mets last season.
His stand out shows at the plate and defensive plays in the field made him a valuable player for the Mets late in the 2012 season.
Unfortunately, the Mets lack resources to retain Hairston from free agency, which means they will enter the 2013 season without him.
Resultantly, another player that can contribute massively to the team’s success will be absent from their line-up.
As per the experts, inclusion of Cowgill is not going to make a huge difference to the chances of success of the club.
More or less, he will be a silent figure in the line-up as he lacks the flair to shine offensively and perform regularly.
The Mets cannot stay comfortable until they have addressed all the issues with their roster.
Apart from the outfield, they will be trying to add another arm in their rotation so that someone replaces Dickey in the rotation.
