New York Mets trade closer Francisco Rodriguez to Milwaukee Brewers – MLB News
The National League’s eastern franchise, New York Mets traded their former All-Star closer Francisco Rodriguez to Milwaukee Brewers in an exchange of cash and two players to be named later in the coming weeks. The trade was announced just after the 2011
All-Star game, which National League won 5-1 on Tuesday, July 12.
“Francisco has been one of the best relievers in the game for many years,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. “He is a high-quality arm who will be a tremendous asset to our bullpen as we prepare for the final months of the regular season and playoffs.”
The 29-year-old right-hand closer’s trade rumours was on the peak throughout the 2011 season however he managed to play 42 games. The right-hand pitcher has a 2-2 record with a 3.16 ERA and 23 saves. His inclusion to Milwaukee will give them strength, commented
the Brewers top slugger Prince Fielder.
Fielder, who launched a three-run homer in the All-Star game to be a MVP said about the trade in a conversation with reporters.
“That is a really big trade. He can really help us, he is a great player. It definitely gives us a spark. We are in first place now and getting him gives us a little more help.”
Rodriguez spent two years with the Mets in which he saved 83 games in 165 games with 3.02 ERA. However, he has only 9-10 record but the Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson was pleased with Rodriguez’s contributions in the club.
He said, “We thank Frankie for his contributions to the Mets and wish him well with the Brewers.”
It is Rodriguez’s 10th overall season in the Major League. He has 32-27 record with a 2.54 ERA in 573 games including 291 saves. He has been an All-Star selection four times in his career but this time was not given a chance with the New York Mets.
According to rumours swirling in the league, Francisco was traded because the Mets are struggling to make their mark in this season and their management was not happy with Rodriguez’s performance.
At the end of the first half of the 2011 season, the Mets have a 46-45 record and are seven games behind division rivals Atlanta braves in the wild card race. Just before the start of the second round, it was the first trade, it is being reported that at
the end of the July there might be such more moves in the Majors. It was also the first trade for Alderson since taking over the Mets in offseason.
