New York Mets waiting for Jonathon Niese’s clearance from doctors – MLB News
The New York Mets’ starter Jonathon Niese, who was sent to hospital on Sunday due to sudden rapid heartbeat and shortness in breathing, underwent a series of tests at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, to determine the inner nature and the cause of his
sudden health issue.
Doctors examined his condition with the help of an echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and treadmill stress tests to analyse what was actually happening to him during his sixth start that he was making against the Texas Rangers on June 25, commented the Mets’
assistant General Manager John Ricco.
“So far, all tests have come back normal,” Ricco said. “We’ll wait and see if this last test picks anything up.”
Yesterday in the afternoon, when he was taken to hospital the Holter monitor, a device to record accurate heart rate, was attached to him to measure what kind of changes he underwent during 24 hours, commented Ricco.
Niese had attacks of tachycardia, a kind of disorder in which patient’s heart beat start beating too fast or too slow, also on Sunday in Texas, according to team trainers. However, on Sunday under a sun throwing harsh up 90-degree rays, Niese had a normal
post-start work out, including a running time that extended to almost 30 minutes. After going such a hard exercise, the 24-year-old pitcher did not report any problem.
He started the game positively but in the sixth inning, he fought to carry his breath on the mound. His condition was realised by manager Terry Francona, but was instructed to not allow him to call Niese back as they agreed to utilise him for one more hitter
before leaving the field.
“The term the trainers are using is tachycardia,” Ricco said. “Once they are done with all the tests, we’ll see if this last test picks anything up.”
As the team is still waiting for further test results, the team management still has not confirmed his availability for next start. “We’ll have to see what the results are of the complete battery of tests,” Ricco said.
Until now, he has made sixteen starts in which he has taken seven wins with six losses with 3.67 ERA. In his sixteen starts, he has struck 79 batters out allowing 40 RBIs and 100 hits. His manager Terry has scheduled him to take on the New York Yankees this
coming Friday but now his game depends on the results of the final tests and the clearance from the doctors.
Today on Wednesday, June 29, the Mets overpowered their rivals Detroit Tigers to clinch their fourth straight win started from the game in which Niese was taken to hospital on Sunday.
