New York Mets want Travis d’Arnaud to live up to evaluations of experts-MLB Update
The trade of R.A Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays by the New York Mets was surrounded by an extra ordinary level of hype.
It was so for obvious reasons, as Dickey was the Cy Young winner for the 2012 season.
What was not obvious, however, was the sudden emergence of Travis d’Arnaud at the major league level as a potential star for the Mets.
The experts rate d’Arnaud as an extremely talented catcher.
As he has been taken from the Blue Jays, they believe the Mets can feel lucky to have acquired him at a time when the catcher is ideally poised to emerge as a quality hitter.
Even the officials of other teams view d’Arnaud differently from the rest of the catching prospects present in the Major League Baseball.
They are of the view that the time is not far when he will be one of the regular members of the Mets' line-up.
As the offseason started, two big issues were faced by the management of the Mets.
The first was the outfield and the second was the catching department. These two areas required attention for different reasons.
They needed an outfielder, because Jason Bay was removed from the roster, plus the fact Scott Hairston became free agent following the end of the 2012 season.
As for the catchers, the majority of the lot available for the Mets lacked offensive credentials, though they were reasonable with regard to defence.
In an era when almost all the teams prefer all-round qualities in their catchers, the Mets cannot stay behind.
No wonder, they have chosen those backstops from the farm system of the Blue Jays that boast amazing offensive talent.
Sandy Alderson, the General Manager of the Mets, has the reason to be pleased after acquiring d’Arnaud through the trade.
“We view d’Arnaud, and I believe the industry views Travis, as the top catching prospect in the game," Alderson said.
The Mets' fans will be eager to know whether the Mets are going to give him opportunities during the upcoming season or not.
As the season starts, they will be looking to keep track of the events concerning catchers of the Mets.
