New York Mets will probably retain David Wright for years to come - MLB News
Despite a heavy toll that financial crisis had taken on the New York Mets, possibility of retention of their third-baseman David Wright after this season is bright.
Without trying to save money on him and spending the same on other options, there are clear indications that the Mets will love to have Wright in their line-up for many years to come.
While discussion was being made even before start of the season, a miraculously stupendous performance by Wright in the season has substantiated prospects of his being awarded contract extension.
The fact General Manager Sandy Alderson has dismissed the notion of Wright being traded somewhere late in the season further elaborates their in-advertent plans to keep him.
"I certainly do not foresee, under any circumstances, David being a topic of discussion at the trade deadline," Alderson said.
Unlike what happened with shortstop Jose Reyes, who later signed contract with Miami Marlins fetching $108 million through free agency, Wright is bracing for different reality.
More than anything else, the fact most members of the club have a tacit liking for him makes it hard to believe that he will be let off.
Wright is hitting close to .400 batting average at the moment and still has not reached that level of his age where he will give a sight of an inevitable decline in his performance.
If the Wright can continue his present performance until end of the season, he can very well achieve a history making milestone. By posting a .400 batting average throughout the season, Wright can become the first hitter to do so since 1941.
This will not only be a monumental landmark for him, the club as a whole will earn the pride. Under this scenario, it will be even more attractive for the Mets to make sure that he plays his entire career in single uniform.
When a player takes the club to heights, in the process of celebration management are prone to reveal their plans more often.
One will hope Wright takes this season as a platform to assert his greatness as a hitter. Regardless of his time with the Mets, one thing is for sure that he is giving a treat to the clubs’ fans with his belligerent outings on the plate.
