New York Mets witnessed better performances from inexpensive players in the season - MLB Update
Analysis of New York Mets’ performance in 2012 Major League regular season suggests that the players that are cheap have put up far more impressive shows than those that fetch hefty amount of money every year from the club.
Johan Santana gets $24 million per year but his win-loss record in the season is unremarkable. In contrast to him, R. A. Dickey who earns a paltry $4.25 million for the year was the most consistent performer for the team in the season.
Excessive allocation of funds for a few players can compel the team to consider their strategy with regard to signing contracts with the players. As some of the team members did not justify with the amount of their yearly salary, management will be extremely
disappointed.
Such an experience will alert them as they begin negotiations next time. They will be mindful of how costly the freezing of money for a lengthy time-period can be.
Jason Bay serves an excellent example for the Mets when it comes to knowing the impact an overvalued player can have on the rest of the team.
Bay is under contract with the Mets. His offensive numbers in the recently concluded regular season are worse than most of the hitters present in their line-up. What is surprising is the fact that he is among the most expensive players in the team.
The Mets posted a dismal win-loss record as they ranked at the lower half of the National League East Division table for the most part of the season.
In the beginning, they were on course but their performance declined sharply in the second half of the season.
In order to improve next year, they will be making important changes in their roster in the offseason. Their first and foremost priority will be retaining potential free agents, David Wright and R. A. Dickey, by offering them contract extensions.
Apart from this, they will be addressing their bullpen and making sure they develop an ideal combination of relievers for the next year.
As the Mets are about to start negotiations with Wright and Dickey, it will be interesting to note as to how their experience in the past with the players has any bearing on the contracts they will sign with them.
