New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist blocks all 22 to shutout Winnipeg Jets 3-0 -NHL Update
New York’s veteran goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, blocked all 22 shots on his net while the Rangers kept scoring goals to shutout the Winnipeg Jets, 3-0, on Tuesday night, January 24, 2012, at the sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, United States.
Lundqvist was the man in helping their previous victory as well as he kept the Rangers alive against defending Stanley Cup champions, Boston Bruins, in an overtime decider. He has started in their past five games straight now and does not look like slowing
down anytime soon.
"I feel great", Lundqvist said. "When you're winning, you're more relaxed and you don't use as much energy between games". "I had to change a little bit. In my head I was kind of relaxed. I was thinking a little bit about All-Star, I'm not going to lie.
That's what you do when you don't play. You try to get away from the game".
New York Ranger’s captain, Ryan Callahan, potted the first goal of the night, 4:05 into the opening period as he intended on passing it to another player but actually shot it right through a bedazzled Winnipeg goalie, Ondrej Pavelec.
With tensions rising, Rangers’, Mike Rupp, and opposing player, Chris Thorburn, exchanged fists nearly two minutes later and were handed down a five-minute major for fighting, which also killed off the scoring in the remaining 14 minutes.
John Mitchell fired off the second straight for New York, which put them ahead with a comfortable, 2-0 lead with less than seven minutes remaining in the mid-period.
Not coming as a surprise, Chris Thorburn and Mike Rupp fought it on the rink once again coming into the second period and both were awarded another major penalty each, having limited their time on the ice to 10 minutes now.
Former Dallas Stars top forward, Brad Richards, made the insurance shot for his 16th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season off an assist by Callahan at the 16:22 mark of the third, securing the match in their favour.
New York will play against New Jersey Devils coming out of the All-Star weekend, so will Winnipeg Jets against Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, January 31.
