New York Rangers' Sean Avery clears waivers, headed to minor league affiliate -NHL Update
Veteran forward for the New York Rangers, Sean Avery, cleared waivers for the second straight time this 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and is on his way again to their affiliate in the minor American Hockey League (AHL), Connecticut
Whale.
Avery cleared waivers on Saturday afternoon, a day after he was placed on them so that a team around the league could claim him, if not; the player was bound to be heading back into the AHL, which finally did happen.
For many, it was not surprising to see him back in the minor leagues since his performance in the NHL with New York did not improve at all after coming back on re-entry waivers earlier last month.
Avery was not popular amongst the team and especially head coach, John Tortorella, who could be seen as the main player in having him sent back, deeming the decision on the comeback of players who were facing injuries but now are ready to make an entry.
"We're getting healthier", Tortorella said Friday, December 30, 2011. "This team is getting healthier, so it comes down to a numbers game".
Before being sent into the AHL after being placed on waivers for the first time this season, Sean Avery doubted that he would be playing in the major league, but made a comeback and is now on his way back, yet again.
Although he is in the final year of his contract, which was a four-year one worth a reported $15.5 million, Avery will be now getting the same salary due to a clause on his contract which denotes him as eligible for the same amount whether in the major or
minor leagues.
By many observers, the move was seen as a good choice for the New York Rangers, who quite frankly have many other things to worry about instead of having to focus on the controversies surrounding Sean Avery. Their working towards a breakthrough season with
a number of top-notch players on the squad and not having Avery would be much better for them in every way.
Seeing that he only has three goals in the past 15 games, not having him on the team will not really affect New York Rangers in regards to performance.
