New York Rangers agree to terms with goalie Martin Biron -NHL offseason Update
Having expressed his desire to stay a Ranger just days before, the New York Rangers have reportedly re-signed veteran goalie, Martin Biron, to an undisclosed contract at the moment on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Biron was set to become an unrestricted free agent on Sunday, July 1st, as his two-year, $1.75 million contract is to expire on that day, but New York did not take their chances is letting the goalie test his value is a net minder hungry free
agency.
According to sources, Biron’s new contract is of two years with a value of $2.6 million, boosting his previous annually salary cap hit from $875,000 to $1.3 million.
“We have had several positive discussions with the Rangers that are hopefully headed in the right direction, because Marty’s first choice is to remain in New York,” Biron’s agent, Peter Fish, told The New York Post on Tuesday. “The Rangers have made it clear
that they want to keep him, but there is still some work to be done.”
Obviously, there is no doubt in the fact that Martin Biron might have made more money in the free agency, but leaving a team with which a player has developed so much chemistry with is not always easy, which the goalie did not do.
“I think there would certainly be some attractive options for Marty if he were to become a free agent, but that is not his objective,” Fish added. “He enjoys everything about the Rangers and values his relationship with Henrik, and both sides are working
so that he stays with the team.”
The 34-year-old was drafted by Buffalo Sabres as the 16th overall back in the 1995 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and played nearly nine seasons with them before being traded off to Philadelphia Flyers.
Biron also has experience playing with New York Islanders before moving onto the Rangers for a registered total of 500 games played and an accumulated .911 save percentage and 2.61 goals-against average.
Last season, Martin Biron had a 2.46 goals-against average along with two shutouts to his name along with going 12-6.
