New York Rangers cut Sean Avery, place veteran forward on waivers –NHL News Update
New York Rangers cut one of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) most controversial players, Sean Avery, by placing the veteran forward on waivers despite him having a good training camp and preseason performance, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon, October
4, 2011.
Sean Avery will be placed on waivers for the next 24 hours, in which another major league franchise has the chance to grab the player and takeover the remaining $4 million remaining on his four-year contract, of which one season is left.
Otherwise, the 31-year-old may be sent to New York Rangers affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), Connecticut Whale.
While making the announcement, New York Rangers head coach, John Tortorella, made quite a bold statement, which could shows signs of conflicts with Avery and the team management. He added that there are a number of players available on the roster which are
better than Avery in a lot of different ways.
"I think we have better players than Sean Avery, plain and simple", Tortorella said. "I can dodge it 10 different ways without trying to run Sean over -- I thought he had a good camp, but I think the makeup of our team and some of the people we've added
and some of the youth we've added as far as depth put Sean in this spot. I wish him good luck in everything, but we've gone by that. I think we're a better club. The players that are here are better than Sean Avery. They're more versatile in a lot of different
areas".
Earlier last week, the team management had made it clear that they were looking to cut either Sean Avery or Erik Christensen to finalise their mandatory 23 man roster and eliminate that extra player. Now it is clear what their final decision was.
Unless Avery can get a gig somewhere else on another major league franchise, he will be spending his 10th season out of the NHL.
Being a forward, Avery has not put up high numbers in respect of scoring goals over the past few seasons, which have ultimately placed his career in jeopardy.
It will be interesting to see what develops in the next 24 hours as Avery looks to reach an agreement with another club.
