New York Rangers demolish New York Islanders 7-2
The New York Rangers ended with a season-high 52 shots, while Matt Gilroy had his first two-goal match in the NHL, as the Rangers crushed city rivals Islanders 7-2.
While both teams started the game on a high, it was the New York Rangers who got off to the better start, when they scored in the opening minute of the match to take the lead. Matt Gilroy scored for the hosts from a well placed flick shot. The visitors tried
to hit back immediately, and came up with some good attacking moves, and they were rewarded with the equaliser in the ninth minute. The goal was scored off a brilliant Rob Schremp strike.
The New York Islanders then took the lead with their second goal in the very next minute. The goal was scored by PA Parenteau from a simple tip-in shot. The home team started to attack, and tried to level the scores before going into the break.
The strong Rangers offence managed to score in the final minute of the opening period to level the scores. The goal was scored by Marian Gaborik from a powerful strike, as the period ended with the scores level at 2-2. During the course of the period, the
Rangers made 18 goal attempts, while the Islanders made 12 goal attempts.
The second period was dominated by the home team in terms of possession, and goal attempts. After a few early chances, the Rangers scored in the 13th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Matt Gilroy.
The Rangers then continued to pile on the pressure, and scored in the 19th minute. Brain Boyle scored from a spectacular backhand shot. The period ended with the Rangers leading 4-2, as the home team made 18 goal attempts compared to just four for the Islanders.
The final period was again dominated by the home side, as they threatened with a wave of attacks throughout the period. They scored in the fifth minute through Brandon Dubinsky, and soon after through Ruslan Fedotenko to make the score 6-2.
The Rangers rounded off the scoring in the 11th minute, through a decent Derek Stepan strike. The game ended with the score on 7-2. Matt Gilroy was named the star selection of the match, as he scored two goals.
