New York Rangers dominate Winnipeg Jets with 4-2 win -NHL Update
Winnipeg Jets are falling behind with each passing game and are now eight points behind eighth place Buffalo Sabres for the final playoff spot after losing,4-2, against New York Rangers, Wednesday night, March 28, 2012, at the sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada.
Jets still have an opportunity to make a last push for the postseason, but seeing how the other teams are playing at the moment, it might be difficult to make it back in time.
"It's difficult, for sure," Jets forward, Tanner Glass, said. "You play all year to get toward the playoffs, and when you kind of squander some chances at home here, that we feel were games we needed to win to get in, it's difficult."But I don't know if
we're out of it yet, but we can't play like we are."
Spencer Machacek and Bryan Little got Winnipeg off to a strong start with two straight goals going into round-two of the matchup nearly a minute apart.
Winnipeg could not keep their defences up as New York replied with two of their own from Michael Del Zotto and Ryan Callahan firing off on a shorthanded situation and then a power play opportunity respectively.
Brian Boyle broke the tie at 3:07 in the third while Alex Burmistrov’s penalty cost Winnipeg dearly as Derek Stepan insured the match midway through on the power play advantage for his 17th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular
season.
"With all of the penalties that we took, we just couldn't get our game going," Rangers’ coach, John Tortorella, said. "I thought that (Lundqvist) was really good in the first half. Once we got into some sort of flow as far as people getting onto the ice,
I thought that's when we felt a lot more comfortable."
New York is hot with three straight victories now. Rangers will be going into Friday night’s matchup against Montreal Canadiens with extreme confidence which could have it very difficult of the visiting team.
Winnipeg has the next on the road against Carolina Hurricanes the same day, which will be a must win matchup to keep some hope of making the playoffs alive.
