New York Rangers eliminate Washington Capitals in Game 7, 2-1 -NHL Playoffs Update
It was down to Game 7 for Washington and New York in one of the most thrilling series of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Rangers emerged victorious with a Game 7 victory, surprisingly in regulation, as Marian Gaborik setup Michael Del Zotto for the game-winner for a 2-1 victory on Saturday night, May 12, 2012.
The Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, went wild and roared with excitement as their home team glided to an easy win, but it certainly did not come without an intense fight from the Capitals side.
"It feels good to get that win," Rangers forward, Marian Gaborik, said. "You have to enjoy it for a little bit, but Monday we start from scratch again. We need to feel good about ourselves and get ready for the next series."
Washington’s rookie goalie, Braden Holtby, was playing amazing as usual as he faced more shots than his counterpart in the New York net, Henrik Lundqvist, but falling short on two of 31 just gave Rangers the victory.
"It's disappointing," said Braden Holtby. "We really did believe in here that we had the team to do it all. We gave ourselves a great chance. It's a tough loss. What we can take out of it is that New York is a very good team. We didn't leave anything on
the table."
Brad Richards continued to display leadership qualities by going wide on the net and giving New York a decisive lead just 1:32 into the matchup, which they managed to cling on to until the final 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
"It's a big goal. It gets the nerves out," Richards said.
Del Zotto’s game-winner at 10:05 really frustrated the Washington club as Roman Hamrlik was the only one to score for the Capitals 38 seconds later, but nothing came from the away team after that.
Washington’s chances at grabbing the Stanley Cup might be over, but New York can now focus on facing New Jersey Devils for the title of the Eastern Conference champion when both meet in the third round of the postseason.
