New York Rangers emerge victorious in triple overtime 2-1 against Washington Capitals -NHL Update
In one of the most intense postseason matchups to date, New York Rangers emerged victorious when the dust settled in triple overtime, 2-1, against Washington Capitals, to take a one game lead in Game 3 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup
Eastern Conference Playoff Semi-Finals.
The Verizon Center was pumped up on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, as they witnessed some amazing performances by their Capitals team.
Washington captain, Alex Ovechkin, was given a just a little over 13 minutes to play in Game 3, which had some observers criticise the way coach, Dale Hunter, has chose to play things while others praise his wisdom.
Going up against the Rangers, Capitals needed all the firepower they could possibly get as veteran goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, just could not stop blocking shots. He faced 46 and fell short on only one and blocked a number of crucial attempts during regulation
and in the overtime periods. Without his luck working, any goalie could not have stopped such point blank shots like Lundqvist did.
Rookie Washington goalie, Braden Holtby, was also playing in top form as he was outshot with 49 attempts but kept his form and unluckily gave away the overtime game-winner but nevertheless, put up a great match.
Ryan Callahan got the lucky opening shot as he was fed the puck on a power play after it was deflected to turn around and fire it past Holtby 6:41 into the second.
John Carlson put Washington right up with his first of the series on a breakaway alongside Alexander Semin.
Failing to score in regulation and as Washington missed a number of good chances in the final minutes, New York’s Marian Gaborik settled it in trope OT with his second of the postseason on an assist from Brad Richards to take the win.
"When you get into that many hours of playing, it becomes a mental game," Rangers coach, John Tortorella, said. "I felt if the game got longer and longer, our team was at an advantage. We have a mentally tough group. Just not giving in -- that's the key."
Game 4 is in Washington on Saturday, May 5.
