New York Rangers get first home win beat San Jose Sharks 5-2 -NHL Match Update
New York finally witnessed their home team winning for their first win at the Madison Square Garden ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season began as the Rangers beat the San Jose Sharks, 5-2, Monday night, October 31, 2011, in
New York, New York, United States.
Snapping their two-game losing streak which began with a, 4-2, loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs and followed with a shootout defeat by the Ottawa Senators, 5-4, New York Rangers finally played with some coordination which obviously showed throughout
the match.
"We played some good periods of hockey but we weren't able to get a win here because we didn't play a full game", said Rangers goaltender Martin Biron, who made 24 saves to improve to 2-0 this season. "To be able to consistently play through zone after zone,
that was the key and we did that for 60 minute and got rewarded".
A fight broke out seven seconds into the game as Ryane Clowe and New York’s, Brandon Prust, exchanged fists and were awarded a five-minute major penalty each.
Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan scored two goals straight to open the match nearly 10 minutes apart. Stepan potted his first of the regular season during their second power play opportunity as San Jose’s, Martin Havlat, was booked for interference with a
minor.
Logan Couture potted his fourth to level the match a little over midway through the second by exactly three minutes later; New York started a shooting spree of their own.
Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov and captain, Ryan Callahan, scored three straight with a 5:12 timeframe to break the tie, extend the lead and ultimately secure the match since both teams were unable to answer with anymore goals during the third and final regulation
period.
"He played well", New York Rangers head coach, John Tortorella, said about Callahan. "With each game that goes by, he's getting better and better".
Rangers have three more games in New York to kick off the month of November, starting with the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, while San Jose Sharks, having their five-game winning streak snapped, hope to continue winning as they have the next six at home against
the Pittsburgh Penguins first of all the same day.
