New York Rangers’ goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist, has been named for another National Hockey League (NHL) award, the Hart Trophy, for the 2011-2012 season following his selection among three finalist goaltenders of the league for Vezina
Trophy award a couple of days earlier.
According to the latest announcement from the league, Tampa Bay Lightning’s centre, Steven Stamkos, and Pittsburgh Penguins’ centre, Evgeni Malki, have also been shortlisted for this year’s trophy.
One of them will be selected for the award through the vote by general managers of 30 NHL franchises.
The award is given to the best player, who could be a netminder or a player from any other position, at a ceremony to be held on June 15, 2012.
It is attended by leading sports and entertainment industries celebrities and other notable figures from other segments of society.
The league has been announcing top three players into each category since April 20 and the process will complete with nominations of leading players for all ten categories until April 30.
Lundqvist is the only player to have been nominated for two awards and if he is able to top the list of contenders for both categories, it will be a rare occasion for a player to earn such an honour in the game history.
Other players in the category of the leading netminders of the league are Nashville Predators’ Pekka Rinne and Los Angeles Kings' Jonathan Quick.
Lundqvist has one of the best goal-against average and is a key member of Rangers’ squad.
His record consists of 1.97 goals-against average and .930 gaols save percentage. Courtesy of his form and contribution from other players, Rangers have won the regular-season Eastern Conference title for the first time since 1993-94.
The player is said to be happy over the selection of his name for another category. Apparently, he is not much focused on the point if he is going be picked up as the winner in any of the categories or even for both.
