New York Rangers heat up with 3-2 winover Carolina Hurricanes -NHL Update
New York grabbed their second straight to extend their dominating lead over the Eastern Conference with 88 points now as the Rangers toppled Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2, Thursday night, March 1, 2012, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States.
Carolina knew that going up against a team like New York would not be easy, but trying to take over the match was their aim at which they ultimately failed.
"We grinded it away, and Marty (Biron) made some key saves at some real important times of the game when we had some struggles," Rangers coach, John Tortorella, said. "It was one of his better games, bouncing back after a couple of games where it has been
a little bit of a fight for him."
Hurricanes failed to take advantage of four out of five power play advantages, which could have allowed them to overtake the match but New York was just too focused on continuing their domination.
Carolina’s top rookie, Jeff Skinner, kicked off the scoring with his 17th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season on the power play on a penalty which carried over from the first period.
New York came right back as Artem Anisimov and Marian Gaborik added two straight to take the lead, 2-1, entering the final 20-minute period.
Brandon Prust added the third and final goal for New York 1:57 into the last which allowed New York to take the match as Jay Harrison fired off another for Carolina with 40 seconds left to play.
"It feels nice, but we still have a lot of games left," Gaborik said. "I want to put up some more goals. We have a tough stretch coming up with a lot of games in March. Hopefully we'll get healthy and keep plugging away."
New York is now on a three-game winning streak and is currently leading the Eastern Conference. Rangers are looking to continue rolling as they have the next against a struggling Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
Carolina has the next at home against Tampa Bay Lightning as well a day later on Saturday, which will definitely be interesting to see as they have advantage of taking on a team that would be playing multiple games back-to-back.
