New York Rangers in talks with Goalie Martin Biron -NHL Update
Veteran goalie, Martin Biron, had an applaudable 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with New York, and now that he will be becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, it is believed that Rangers and the player are involved in negotiations to work out another deal.
According to Katie Strang of ESPNNewYork.com:
“There’s been ‘progress’ made in contract talks between Biron and the Rangers.”
Other than that, there have been no official reports from either side about negotiations going on for a future contract.
At the age of 34 and a declining performance with each season, it will be hard for Martin Biron to secure a long-term contract and there is a high possibility that the deal would not be longer than a year or two at the maximum.
It has also been learned that Biron will be looking towards securing a higher paying deal instead of his $875,000 salary cap hit for the past two seasons signed back prior to the 2010-2011 NHL regular season. Demanding more money from the Rangers just might be an issue due to their salary cap woes and could have Biron testing the free agency market.
Drafted as the 16th overall pick during round-one of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo Sabres, Biron spent nine straight seasons with his original team before moving onto the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders and finally the Rangers.
He has played 500 games in his lengthy career with 228 wins, 188 losses, an accumulated save percentage of .911 and 2.61 goals-against average and 28,206 total played minutes in front of the net.
For New York Rangers, Martin Biron provided immense goaltending depth as he made 21 starts this past season, giving main goalie Henrik Lundqvist ample time to rest. Most of them came during the final parts of the regular season as the team kept Lundqvist out to prepare for the postseason.
It is highly likely that New York Rangers will want to keep Martin Biron on the team for the upcoming one or two seasons which should have fans expecting to see him back next time around for sure, unless the worst possible scenario plays out.
