New York Rangers move ahead of Buffalo Sabres after stunning Boston Bruins 5-3 –NHL Update
New York Rangers saved themselves from a near collision with ninth placed Carolina Hurricanes on Monday after they defeated the Boston Bruins by 5-3. They moved up to a safe seventh position ahead of Buffalo Sabres with a one point lead and extended their
winning streak to two in a row at the sold out Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.
Boston continues its slump, not winning more than two games since February. It seems a bit odd for them to continue playing like that at such a crucial time.
Bruins is currently third in the Eastern Conference with 99 points.
New York gained momentum late in the third period and made the equalising goal with less than three minutes remaining. Levelling the match was one thing, winning it in that short time frame was its sign of truly being a playoff worthy team.
Bruins scored two goals 44 seconds apart in the first period to take an early lead. Henrik Lundqvist faced 19 shots in the first 20 minutes alone.
He made 27 of 30 rejections overall. The National Hockey Leagues’ top goalie, Tim Thomas, deflected 21 of 25 shots for Boston.
"At this stage of the season, you hope it's a real good lesson that we learned tonight," said Bruins’ coach, Claude Julien.
Daniel Paille and Nathan Horton gave Bruins its 2-0 lead at the end of the first and Chris Kelly added their final of the night, midway through the second.
New York answered back when Vaclav Prospal popped two into the net within two minutes, both goals assisted by left winger, Wojtek Wolski.
The home team managed to give its crowd a breath of fresh air after they decreased the lead to 3-2 before the final period.
The clock was ticking down and time was running out for them. The crowd had hardly settled into their seats after Brandon Dubinsky tying goal that Michael Sauer took the lead 55 seconds later.
Fans were just going crazy at that moment.
"It's a feeling that you can't describe when you hear that many people going crazy", Dubinsky said. "We fought so hard for so many months and we needed these two points. That part of it makes it even that much more emotional".
Derek Stepan put in the final goal for Rangers with 53 seconds remaining on an empty net.
New York has found its way to win matches. After losing to its rival city team, New York Islanders, by an embarrassing 6-2 on March 31, it has gained back its respect as it defeated Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday and now Boston Bruins.
New York Rangers face Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday for its second last regulation season game.
