New York Rangers overcome New Jersey Devils 3-1
New York Ranger allowed a season-high 44 shots on goal, but goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist was on top of his game as he made 43 saves to lead his side to a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night.
The New Jersey Devils undoubtedly started the game as the stronger of the teams. They attacked right from the word go and were determined to take an early lead. The home team was duly rewarded for their persistence, when they took the lead in the seventh
minute from Travis Zajac’s brilliant flick shot. Buoyed by the home support, the Devils continued to press on in search of another goal. However that meant they left gaps in defence, which the Rangers exploited to perfection. Brian Boyle leveled the scores
with a powerful strike in the eighth minute.
Though the home team continued to pile on the pressure by creating some decent goal scoring opportunities, they failed to capitalise on their chances and the period ended with scores level at 1-1. During the course of the first period the Devils made
16 goal attempts, while the New York Rangers made five goal attempts.
The second period saw an intense offensive battle, which saw both teams threaten each others goal on numerous occasions. The 20 minutes of play saw both teams put together some brilliant attacking moves. While the Devils looked stronger
going forward, it was the Rangers who scored in the 14th minute to take the lead through Michal Rozsival. The period saw many more goal attempts from both teams, but no more goals were scored as the period ended with the New York Rangers leading 2-1. During
the period the Devils made 20 goal attempts compared to the Rangers 12 goal attempts.
The final period didn’t match the energy of the previous two periods. Both teams switched into defensive mode, and seemed content with playing on the counter attack. The home team had their share of scoring chances but their finishing let them down
again. It looked as if the period would end goalless, but the Rangers scored with just a few seconds remaining through a Brandon Dubinsky flick shot. The period and the match ended with the New York Rangers winning 3-1. Henrik Lundqvist was named the
star selection of the match.
