New York Rangers put Sean Avery on waivers yet again and its meaning for the player -NHL Special
The National Hockey League’s (NHL) most controversial player, Sean Avery, is stuck up in a mess yet again as his team, the New York Rangers, placed the player on waivers for the second time during the 2011-2012 NHL regular season, which has certainly raised
some questions, not only about the decision but about the veterans’ future as well.
For many observers of the NHL, claiming Sean Avery was not something teams around the league earlier on and they do not expect them to pick him up now anytime soon since his waivers will begin this afternoon, lasting till Saturday, after that which he might
be assigned to their minor league affiliate club in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Connecticut Whale.
The first time when Avery was placed on waivers and brought back was due to the public demand by a lot of fans around New York, but now that the Rangers have multiple healthy players looking to be rejoining the roster, the management just does not think
he will be having a vital place on the team anymore.
"We're getting healthier", Rangers coach, John Tortorella, said about players coming back from injuries. "This team is getting healthier, so it comes down to a numbers game".
Sean Avery has not been playing in the past nine Rangers’ games and does not look to be competing in their 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic match against the Philadelphia Flyers either, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 2.
For many players on the New York team, Sean Avery is a good guy and a friend but they cannot control the management’s decisions even if they wanted to.
"Sean's a good friend", New York’s 27-year-old left winger, Brandon Prust, said about Avery. "It's sad to see him go, but those are decisions that are out of our hands. Obviously we hope he does well and he's going to keep working hard and try to get back
up here".
Avery made a comeback in the major league on November 5, after spending nearly a month with their minor league club when the Rangers summoned him back through re-entry waivers. He is also expected to clear them this time around as well, with the slight chance
of another team maybe picking him up instead.
Wojtek Wolski is expected to be coming back after recovering from a spots hernia surgery earlier in November along with Marc Staal, who went out last season due to a severe concussion after a hit by brother, Eric Staal, in February. His season debut is highly
anticipated and could be a good sign for the Rangers.
In some articles, NHL writers have even suggested the idea of the Toronto Maple Leafs making a run for the veteran since they are in dire need of a physical forward who could also play the role of enforcer for them, something which certainly might be a surprising
move if it happens.
The fun part was hearing that Rangers’ general manager, Glen Sather, thinks that he made a mistake by bringing back Sean Avery for the second time when the team has a bunch of players waiting for time on the ice.
There is no exact reason why Sean Avery does not seem to have a secure future in the major league, but one thing is for sure which is the fun and controversy he has provided the fans with over the years.
