New York Rangers re-sign defenseman Anton Stralman as he becomes another one to avoid arbitration
New York Rangers have re-signed their defenseman, Sweden’s Anton Stralman, in a two-year deal for which he would be given $3.4 million, $1.6 million for the first year and $1.8 million for the second.
The news was broken by New York Rangers own Twitter account, twitter.com/thenyrangers which tweeted,
“The #NYR have agreed to terms on a new contract with defenseman Anton Stralman”
Stralman had an arbitration hearing on Tuesday, 31st July but he chose to sign the deal instead of going to arbitration. This signing also means that now 13 players who had decided to go to arbitration hearing on 4th July, earlier this
month have avoided arbitration hearings.
Only three players are left now and they are Nashville Predators’ Sergei Kostitsyn and New Jersey Devils’ Mark Fayne who have hearings on Thursday, 2nd August and Mark Fistric who has got hearing on Wednesday, 1st August.
It was expected that Stralman will re-sign and will avoid arbitration as sports reporter of Newsday, Steve Zipay, had predicted long ago, on 12th July via his twitter account, twiiter.com/stevezipay, that the deal would be done as he had tweeted,
“Anton Stralman's arbitration hearing set for July 31. Thinking there will be deal before that”.
The 25-year-old professional hockey player, who would turn 26 on Wednesday, 1st August was drafted 216th overall in the seventh round of the 2005 NHL draft by Toronto Maple Leafs but did not sign a contract with them until 2007.
After being drafted he kept on playing in his country’s Elitserien Hockey League. After signing him in 2007 Maple Leafs sent him to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates, Toronto Marlies, and made his NHL debut in the same season.
The 6-foot-1, 180 pound defenseman played 57 games for Toronto Marlies and 88 games for Toronto Maple Leafs, before being traded to Columbus Blue Jackets where he again played for two seasons.
Tibro, Sweden’s native was given a one-year contract for $900,000 in the November of 2011 by New York Rangers, for whom he played 53 games, scored two goals and 16 assists. Overall he has played 265 NHL games, scoring 13 goals and 79 assists for total of
92 points.
