New York Rangers sign Tim Kennedy
The New York Rangers have signed forward Tim Kennedy to a one-year contract worth $550,000. Kennedy spent last season with the Buffalo Sabres, but was released by the club after the arbitrator rewarded the young forward a one-year $1 million contract. After he was released he became a free agent and was free to sign with any willing club.
Kennedy was drafted 181st overall by the Sabres in the sixth round of the 2005 National Hockey League entry draft. After being selected Kennedy completed his final two years at Michigan State University registering 43 points in 42 games in both of his final two seasons. In 2008-09 Kennedy joined the Sabres organization and spent the year playing with their American Hockey League affiliate the Portland Pirates. Last season was Kennedy’s first full year in the League.
Kennedy will have to battle for ice time on New York’s left wing next season, however his strong play last year should give him a spot with the club to begin the season. Riddled with overpaid, aging forwards Kennedy has the opportunity to be a mainstay with the Rangers in the future. Moreover, the 24-year-old will be able to provide the Rangers with additional scoring depth, something they are in desperate need of after a difficult 2009-10.
General manager Glen Sather was able to get a youngster with a full season of NHL experience for the League minimum. This signing could potentially payoff well for the franchise. Although, one cannot expect Kennedy to come into the line-up and make an immediate impact he could produce well for the club long term. In addition, if he is able to score somewhat consistently as well as defend he could find a permanent home on the club's third line in 2010-11.
Last season with the Sabres Kennedy notched 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 78 games.
