New York Rangers stay strong for fourth straight over Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 -NHL Update
New York had it tough entering the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season but with the start of November, the team showed what their All-Star line-up was capable of as the Rangers won their fourth straight over the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-3,
on Thursday night, December 1, 2011, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States.
For head coach, John Tortorella, Blocking shots, diverting pucks and keeping an eye on the net are some of the things that are keeping his team going against tough competition.
"We're one of the better teams at blocking shots," John Tortorella said after his team's fourth consecutive victory. "It's one of the things we're asking all the guys to do. It's part of it, and I think it starts with our leadership. Look at Ryan Callahan,
who's wearing the 'C.' He does all that stuff. When you're winning as we are right now, people start buying into it."
Jiri Tlusty opened the scoring only 35 seconds into the first period to give Carolina an early lead, but was followed closely by New York’s captain, Ryan Callahan, who added his 10th of the season during their initial power play opportunity to
level the match nearly a minute later.
Carolina’s rookie, Jeff Skinner, came back in the final nine seconds of play and added his 11th of the season to take the lead once again for the home team, giving the 12,000 plus crowd something to rejoice over, but what awaited them in the second
period, they could never have imagined.
Ryan McDonagh kicked off the shooting spree nearly midway through the second while Marian Gaborik and Sean Avery scored two straight nearly two minutes apart to give the Rangers a commanding, 4-2, lead.
Hurricanes defenseman, Derek Joslin, who barely escaped being suspended by NHL’s senior vice president for player safety and hockey operations, Brendan Shanahan, for his hit on the Florida Panthers’ Kris Versteeg in their previous matchup in Tuesday, scored
his first of the season to bring Carolina back into the match in the final three minutes of the second period.
Michael Sauer inaugurating goal of the season 5:42 into the third secured the match and finalised the scoring to give New York the lead they needed to take their fourth straight contest.
