New York Rangers stay strong shorthanded to down Buffalo Sabres 4-1 -NHL Update
When teams get those precious power play opportunities, they are expected to capitalise and score some goals, but Saturday night was the exact opposite for New York as the Rangers fired two shorthanded goals to down the Buffalo Sabres, 4-1, at the First
Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York, United States.
Martin Biron was in the net for New York and by playing against his former team with whom he spent nine straight seasons with, it was truly a special moment and it showed with his 32 blocked shot performance out of a 33 total Buffalo attempts.
"It's a lot of fun to play here," Biron said after the Sabres stunning matchup. "There's always a lot of energy and always a high-tempo game. And you want to play well against old teammates."
Carl Hagelin, who is one of New York’s leading players in their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate club based in Hartford, had another solid game with the major league Rangers by getting two goals with only three shots on the net.
Hagelin was the one to kick  of the Rangers scoring with his second of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season shorthanded a little over midway through the second as New York’s captain, Ryan Callahan, went out with a minor penalty for cross-checking.
"For him to keep on getting his minutes is to play away from the puck," New York head coach, John Tortorella, said about Hagelin. "There were some stumbles, but it's really encouraging that we have another young kid in our lineup who's adding already, in
just a few games."
Thomas Vanek potted his 14th of the year off an assist by Jason Pominville after a strong slap shot in front of Biron, which would be Buffalo’s first and last of the night and Ryan Callahan came back into the contest to get another New York goal
shorthanded on a breakaway.
Hagelin fired off his second of the night 3:02 into the third and final period of regulation while Marian Gaborik added the power play goal with less than three minutes to go to secure the matchup.
New York Rangers will be playing the next at home against Florida Panthers on Sunday while Buffalo Sabres are to host Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
