New York Rangers win 2-1 in shootout after a tough battle with Washington Capitals
The second game of Monday saw the Washington Capitals play host to the New York Rangers. The match was played at the Verizon Centre with around 18,000 fans coming to witness the match. This was the 728th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere
Series.
The match saw both teams coming up with a hard fought contest which saw the scores level at the end of regulation time. With the scores level on 1-1 the match went into overtime. No goals were scored during overtime but New York Rangers goal in shootout
won them the match. Marian Gaborik was named the star selection of the match for his important equalizing goal for the New York Rangers.
Both teams waited for chances to come their way and didn’t go relentlessly on the attacks as the game started. Though there were several open spaces for teams to work their way past the opposing defence but to ensure no risk was taken they waited for some
time so that they settled into the game.
With the passage of time, both teams grew in confidence and chances started to come. There were several goal scoring chances for both sides but they failed to net the puck. The result was a goalless period. During the course of the period, New York Rangers
made 7 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 5 goal attempts.
The second period started off with the Washington Capitals making the early attacks. Along with some excellent passing and combination, the Capitals successfully scored through Matt Hendricks from a simple tip in shot in the 2nd minute to take
the lead.
The Capitals continued to attack for some time after which the New York Rangers started to attacks as well. Each passing minute saw the Rangers getting better and better. Unfortunately, despite all the several chances the Ranger couldn’t score.
The period ended with the Washington Capitals leading 1-0 as they made 6 goal attempts while New York Rangers ended up firing 11 shots on goal.
Washington Capitals like the previous period started off stronger of the two teams. They attacked right from the word go but this didn’t last long and neither could they score this time out. However, there was a change of winds and the New York Rangers got
stronger on the offence and successfully scored through Marian Gaborik in the 14th minute.
This time there were plenty of scoring chances for the New York Rangers but they couldn’t score any further goals. Some attacks they constructed were absolutely brilliant but the final touch was disappointing.
Regulation time ended with the scores level on 1-1 with Washington Capitals making 6 goal attempts in the period and New York Rangers making 10 goal attempts.
The match went into overtime where no goals were scored. As a result, the match was decided in shootout where Artem Anisimov’s goal proved to the difference as New York Rangers won the match 2-1.
