New York Rangers wins 5-2 against Pittsburgh Penguins in front of Penguins' home crowd
The first game on Sunday was played at the Consol Energy Center as Pittsburgh Penguins played host to New York Rangers.
Both teams are in the playoff’s cut but Rangers are still not assured off a spot with the tight battle that has been going on in the last month.
Penguins, on the other hand, were looking to win and move up the table as they still have a chance to win the Conference.
Both teams made a decent start to the game which saw them both scoring a goal apiece to keep the scores on level terms.
The second period saw Penguins dominating the game in terms of shot on goal but no goals were scored.
Penguins scored the first goal in the final period but Rangers scored four goals after this to win the game by 5-2 in the end.
Ryan Callahan, winger of Rangers, was named the star of the game as he scored a goal and made two assists.
The game started off on the slower side for the two teams as they were reluctant to go on the attacks. However, things got smooth with the passage of time but they weren’t able to get into the scoring positions due to the tight defence of both teams at the
start of the period.
Rangers with some strong play finally managed to score in the 12th minute through Artem Anisimov’s well placed flick shot.
The period saw both teams getting strong offensively which resulted in Penguins scoring in the 16th minute through Jordan Staal to level the scores.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with Rangers making 7 shots on goal while Penguins made 10 shots on goal.
The second 20 minutes of play saw Penguins making a slow start but with the passage of time Penguins was the dominating force in the period.
Penguins came across several scoring chances due to its brilliant passing and shooting. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net.
The period ended goalless with the scores level on 1-1. During the period, Penguins made 19 shots on goal while Rangers could manage just 7 shots on goal.
The final period saw Penguins making a decent start which saw them scoring in the seventh minute through Chris Kunitz to get into the lead.
However, Rangers managed to level the scores in the 10th minute with the goal scored by Marian Gaborik during a power-play.
Rangers used the power-play to the fullest as they scored once again in the same minute through Ryan Callahan to get into the lead.
Rangers with their strong offence killed the game with two more goals in the 19th and 20th minutes.
The goals were scored by Derek Stephan and Brandon Dubinsky. In the end, Rangers won the game by 5-2.
