New York University men’s volleyball team loses to George Mason University by 3-1 on Saturday
Saturday night did not turn out to be the way that the New York University men’s volleyball team expected it to be.
Not only they finished it off by losing to Division I George Mason University, they also got knocked out of the running of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament for good.
The match that took place between the two teams went on for four exciting sets and was part of the quarterfinals of the tournament. With the loss on Fairfax, the season of NYU comes to an end.
With their recent loss, the Violets have now registered a total of nine defeats in this season. The number of times that they have been able to achieve a win are 19.
Having lost the match, the Violets admit that their team was out played by the Patriots. The type of skill and prowess that the Patriots displayed during the game could not be challenged by the Violets effectively. The Patriots remained well coordinated
and precise all through the match. The relentless attack of the Patriots along with their almost unbreakable defence provided a very tough a challenge for the Violets to put up with.
The first set of the match saw George Mason take the lead for themselves early on. Once they had control of the court, they did not let it go at any point in the game. The Violets tried to close in the gap but they could not significantly threaten the Patriots.
As a result, it was a fairly easy job for the Violets to take the match to its close and bag it at 25-16.
With the first set out of their hands, the Violets felt the pressure to step up their play and give the Patriots a hard time. They were successful in rallying together and putting up a commendable effort. What followed was a heated match between the two
teams that thrilled the spectators. However, the team that was able to secure a win in the end was the Patriots, who took the set at 26-24.
In order to give themselves a winning chance, it became essential for the Violets to take a win. They were able to charge with full force in the third set and as a result, owned it at 25-23. However, this was the only win that the Violets made as the fourth
set of the match went the way of the Patriots. The Violets lost it to their opponents at 25-16.
“We were there, but we didn't play our best ball,” junior opposite hitter Luke Hamlet of the Violets said after the match had reached its close. “They were a good, solid team that didn't make many mistakes. It was tough.”
