New York Yacht Club dominates 2012 Cumberland Cup – Sailing News
Impressive sailing from the New York Yacht Club crew brought them on top of the 2012 Cumberland Cup regatta standings. The regattas was organised and hosted by the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London and supported by Audemars Piguet. The breezy conditions
on Queen Mary Reservoir were ideal for the fleet to have perfect proceedings on the final day of the regatta.
The New York Yacht Club team clinched all four race victories to earn four points and hit the top podium place in the overall standings. The weather conditions were stronger on the race course which really pushed the fleet to their limits but the determination
was there which did not let them lose any hope.
Despite the heavy winds blowing up to 30 knots, the participating teams were able to finish the races on time and formulate the final results which proclaimed the NYYC as the winners.
While speaking to the media, the team captain of the New York YC team, Stu Saffer said, “The race against Royal Perth YC was particularly exciting. The vigorous pre-start, resulting in one boat being OCS and a man overboard, meant the NYYC got lucky! We
are looking forward to meeting a fully-manned RPYC boat next time around!”
The Cumberland Cup is a major keelboat event which attracts global competitors. The teams that are participating this year include Eastern YC (MA, USA), Royal Northern and Clyde YC (Scotland), Island Royals (UK), Southern YC (New Orleans), New York Yacht
Club (USA), Seawanhaka Corinthian YC (New York), Royal Thames YC (UK) and Royal Perth YC (Australia).
The regatta produced some outstanding sailing competitions on the Queen Mary waters under a little bit troubling breeze. Saffer and his team are determined to retain the regatta title next year too as they have performed up the mark in the recent contest.
Overall regatta results are given below:
New York Yacht Club: 4 wins, 0 losses
Seawanhaka Corinthian YC: 3 wins, 1 loss
Royal Northern and Clyde YC: 3 wins, 2 losses
Eastern Yacht Club: 3 wins, 3 losses
