New York Yankee, Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit barely at an arm’s length - Part 1
In sports around the world, every player performs a move or show cases a symbol when he or she reaches a certain goal or victory. For the face of the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter it is his subdued fist pump. The world famous fist pump is something that
all his opponents never want to see because that fist pump is a sign that Jeter is doing something right.
For the Boston Red Sox, seeing that particular fist pump when Jeter becomes the 28th player in all of baseball’s century’s old history to cross the 3000 hits mark will be the worst kind of slap in their faces. The Red Sox will do whatever it takes
to make sure the Jeter doesn’t reach the inevitable milestone before the current series between the two teams finishes. If the historical mark is to be crossed when the Red Sox will be facing the Yankees, Boston will forever be remembered as the team that
gave Jeter his 3000th hit.
On the other hand, if that were to happen it would be the setting of a record and the sweetest kind of victory for the Yankee fans as well as the team who would have that little something to talk about in future games between the teams. The short-stop would
have to perform like a machine if he were to cross the 3000 hit mark while facing the Red Sox, which doesn’t seem likely given the fact that age, has caught up with Jeter this season and he is noticeably a shadow of his former self. Time stops for no man and
Jeter isn’t an exception, still he is better than most young players even after years of service to the Yankees.
Jeter is greatness in the truest sense of the word. He has won almost ever baseball award that there is to win. He started by winning the Rookie of the Year Award that established him and after that followed countless All Star and Most Valued Players Awards.
Thrown in the list of his accomplishments are a couple of Silver Sluggers and Gold Glove Awards along with quite a few World Series Championships which are by far, the greatest achievement out of everything that Jeter has done.
Derek will have the honour of being the first player from the most successful franchise in the history of sports to reach and conquer the 3000 hit mountain. With so many other Yankees setting their own records and forever etching themselves in the history
books, this is something that only Jeter will have to his name and will stand alone to bask in all the glory.
His 3000th comes as an ode to his career that has spread for over 17 years. In an interview before the 2011 Major League Baseball season began, Jeter said that he would sit back and enjoy playing as he makes his way to his 3000th hit.
Although the accomplishment is within an arm’s reach, two to three weeks at most, it comes after a tiring year.
Manager Joe Girardi commented, “I think we’ve all seen him swing the bat better.” While that may be the case, Jeter has been steadily climbing up statistically this season and after an excruciatingly slow start and it seems that by the time the 3000th
leaves his bat, he’ll be back to one of the greatest short-stops in baseball history.
