New York Yankee, Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit barely at an arm’s length - Part 2
When Derek Jeter ultimately belts out his 3000th hit, it won’t be just a record that he’ll set. It would be the hit that would cement his status as one of the greatest Yankee legends that the world has ever seen. Even when his name will be listed
with the other Yankee greats, Jeter will have the satisfaction of knowing that he did something not even the greatest of players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig could do.
Derek has commented a number of times that he would love it if he were to reach his 3000th hit at the Yankee Stadium where he has played his entire life. With just 11 hits left to the make it, manager Joe Girardi commented that although everyone
would love for the special moment to take place at home with thousands of fans in attendance, he will not be doing anything that would pressurise him to physically wear Jeter down.
"Anytime you get a chance to do something special here at the Stadium, you appreciate because of the atmosphere and the environment," Jeter said.
For Jeter to get his wish he will have to perform differently from how he has been since the season began. The celebrated short-stop will have to unleash eleven hits within the duration of eight games. In the 55 games Jeter has played, he has accumulated
a total of 60 hits. It’ll be a hard task to get such a number of hits given that he’ll be facing the best of the best in the form of pitchers from the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers.
As for now, winning the games they are currently playing is the main priority for Jeter as well as the rest of the Yankees. They have been struggling against the Red Sox and suffered humiliating defeats against them being the home team five times in a row.
The last time the Red Sox succeeded in winning the starting five road games against their arch rivals, the Yankees, was in 1912. That was the same year when they won the World Series Championship as well.
Where it was a terrible couple of days for the Yankees, Jeter belted a double off Tim Wakefield which inched him even closer to the historical mark. 11 hits need to come off Jeter’s bat for him to reach new heights of greatness. According to the statistics
since the season began, Derek has been averaging a hit per game but with only eight more home games left, he will have to belt out more than his average amount if he wants to celebrate the record at home.
Although age has crept up and reared its ugly face by slowing down the multiple times All Star, it hasn’t taken that much of a toll on him. Instead of being brought down by the age factor, Derek uses the information he has collected over the years to his
advantage and replaced his physical limitations with his knowledge as a veteran.
Derek is a dignified player who has never been in the spot-light for the wrong reasons, unlike many of his counter parts. Not only has he been the Captain of the New York Yankees for years, Jeter has been the face of the world’s greatest sporting franchise.
Derek is a Yankee through and through, with him being drafted and developed wearing the classic pinstripe uniform that is world famous. The 3000
hits are going to be another chapter in the book of Derek Jeter’s world class career.
