New York Yankees, CC Sabathia reach five-year deal – MLB News
After a long wait, the ambiguity among the New York Yankees and the Carsten Charles Sabathia ended on Monday, when both parties signed a new deal, which will now hold the left-hander with the club for the next five years.
Sabathia decided not to exercise opt-out clause of his contract to be a free agent and agreed on a one-year extension for 30-million-dollars and it will keep him with the New York Yankees for the next five years. He will now get 122-million-dollars for the
next five years.
Until midnight, dubious situation was surrounding the Yankees’ camp, as no one was sure of the coming situation. It was expected that the 31-year-old might use his opt-out clause, but Sabathia took a U-turn and reported the club about expectance. Last four-years
of his seven-year contract he had left.
"My son loves it here. All my kids love it here. My wife loves it here, obviously, and I do, too. I love pitching for the Yankee fans and everything, so it was the easy choice," Sabathia said.
Sabathia became a part of the Yankees in 2009 with a 161-million-dollar seven-year deal. In his three year career with the Yankees, the pitcher has a 59-23 record with a 3.18 ERA. He has been the Most Valuable Pitcher for the club in every crucial situation.
According to the sources, Sabathia will get 25-million-dollars in 2016, the last year of his current deal. The Yankees had also given him 25-million-dollars vesting option for 2017 which also includes 5-million-dollar buyout. Sabathia will only be able to
take his vesting option if he remains on disabled list for less than 45 days in 2016.
"It was just more time. That is all it was. It was never a question about money or anything like that," Sabathia said. "I just want to end my career here."
The Yankees senior vice president and the general manager Brian Cashman praised Sabathia commenting that the lefty has been a vital part of the club and his presence is a driving force for the Yankees.
