New York Yankees, if not Cliff Lee then Carl Crawford?
Major League Baseball may be entering 2011 with an off season period looming over the horizon but things can get weird during this period. For the top teams in the American League and the National League, making logical chances at times seem hard to make;
especially when the pitcher or the hitter you want doesn’t come your way.
For the New York Yankees, one wouldn’t regularly think like that, but ‘Newsday’s’ recent report seems to insinuate something different.
The New York Yankees had a tough time in the regular season and it was owed mainly to the weak pitching line up that came through after Carsten Charles Sabathia threw in a game. Even though the club made the wildcard berth, the team’s significant strength
in the pitching rotation saw the side suffer an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Texas Rangers, who would go on to face the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.
Nevertheless, there have been signs of improvement in the club’s rotation. However, the costs are ever increasing and for the management, it’s important to strengthen the weak areas in the squad where a possibility exists.
The fact that there has been much movement in the free agency this season has got many on their toes. Baseball analysts see the team breaking through with a deal over Cliff Lee in a few weeks.
The fact that the Yankees can afford anyone on the roster is one way to see the club paving way for a new signing. However, there still exists a possibility that Lee might choose to resist and according to Newsday, the Yanks will be pushing for ‘plan B’
which spells a plan to acquire Carl Crawford.
The move is strange and outright inconsistent as the hitter would have a long list of good batters on the bench, to contest with. Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira highlight a strong list of players
in the line-up.
Adding Crawford may be dubbed as an insurance policy but basing a decision on the need of the club, a pitcher would be the right choice for General Manager Brian Cashmore and the rest of the management.
At the moment, it doesn’t seem like Cliff Lee will thrash the offer from the Yanks as no one has the kind of resources that the New York club does.
