New York Yankees 2012 regular season review– Part 9
New York Yankees secured a comfortable win in Game of a three match series against the Los Angeles Angels. With momentum on their side, it seemed the inform Yankees will crush the Angels in Game 2 as well to wrap up their second straight series victory but that did not turn out to be the case. Struggling Angels played out of their skins to post a huge 7-1 upset against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he allowed eight hits and six runs in just over three innings to take his second consecutive loss of the season. Relief pitcher David Phelp was also unable to stop the flow of runs as he gave up 1 hit and one earned run that extended Angels’ lead to 7-1
Angels’ starter C.J. Wilson produced a match winning performance as he allowed just one run in six solid innings, laying the foundations of an impressive Angels’ win in New York.
"We have a couple new pieces and we're just looking to jell," Wilson said.
"I think we're scratching the surface of what we can do," manager Mike Scioscia said.
"The thing we don't want to do is put too much pressure on yourself," Pujols said.
"I think he got us to chase some pitches off the plate inside, and that's what he does," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He can get you to expand the zone and he can break bats and get in on guys. When he got the ball away, we hit pretty good, but when he got it in, we did not."
Albert Pujols seemed to be in decent touch as he doubled to deep centre in the third inning. Second baseman Howard Kendrick and left fielder Vernon Wells hit back to back home runs to help the Angels establish complete control over the contest. For the Yankees, only Robinson Cano managed to trouble the scorers. Yankees’ Manager Joe Girardi looked extremely disappointed wit what he saw from his team but he aimed to fight back strongly in the finale.
