New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 12
After taking an embarrassing 3-7 loss against the Minnesota Twins in the best of three match series, the New York Yankees were looking to regroup and fight back to keep the series. Manager Joe Girardi, as always, had faith in his men, which helped the Yankees
deliver the goods 8-3 in Game 2 to stay alive in the series.
Showing great determination and mental toughness, the Yankees outplayed their American League rivals in finer details of the game to level up the series.
Yankees’ pitchers displayed some top quality throwing skills as they limited Twins’ powerful batting lineup to just three runs. Starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia led from the front as he allowed just four hits and three runs in seven plus innings to lay the
foundations of an impressive victory. Striking out seven batters, he grabbed his first win of the season. Relief pitchers David Robertson and Chris Wade also had a decent time on the mound as the combined to concede just one hit in two scoreless innings.
Twins’ starter Francisco Liriano struggled to execute his game plan as he allowed seven hits and five runs in two plus inning before stepping off the mound.
"It's just one of those things," Sabathia said in a post game interview.
"Fastball command got a lot better," the big left-hander said. "Everybody knows I throw everything off my fastball. Changeup got a lot better. Curveball was really good tonight, too."
"Not only one of my best nights, but it was in Yankee Stadium of all places, and I'm wearing pinstripes," Stewart said proudly. "It's awesome. Definitely one I'm not going to forget."
"Nothing is bothering me. I'm 100 per cent healthy," Liriano said. "I'm just missing my spots and pitching behind the count and you get hurt, especially with hitters like that."
Eduardo Nunez, Chris Stewart and Derek Jeter showed nerves of steel under pressure as they helped their side bounce back for 5-3 lead in the third inning. Andruw Jones smacked a solo home run in the fourth and Stewart singled to left in the seventh to take
the Yankees home.
