New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 14
New York Yankees had one last chance to salvage some of their lost pride after the lost two of their previous three games against the Minnesota Twins. In the finale of a four match series against the Twins, Joe Girardi and his men raised their game to a
higher level to outclass their American League opponents in finer details of the game.
Yankees, who failed to handle the pressure in the previous game, showed nerves of steel o April 19 to prevail 7-6 against the Twins. Starter Phil Hughes had an ordinary time on the mound as he allowed six hits and six runs in just over five innings. However,
rest of the pitching attack made up for his poor effort. Relief pitchers Bone Logan, Rafael Soriano, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera combined to pitch three plus scoreless inning to help the Yankees prevail in a thriller.
Twins starting pitcher Anthony Swarzak also had a forgettable time on the mound as he allowed eight hits and six runs to take his third straight loss of the season.
After the Twins claimed the early 2-0 lead, Curtis Granderson smacked a solo home run to centre in the first to put Yankees on the board. Mark Teixeria also made also made his presence felt with a home run to right centre in the first inning.
"I enjoyed it," said Yankees special adviser Reggie Jackson. "I think the nicest part was that he had two more chances to hit four. I was making sure I was watching the TV."
"A lot of work went into today before we actually stepped onto the field. "You get it down there in that zone for him, he can turn on a baseball. That's a nice porch out there for left-handed hitters and he took full advantage of it."
Captain Derek Jeter singled to right centre and Granderson belted his second and third home runs of the game to put Yankees 7-4 ahead. Twins fought back well to reduce the deficit to 6-7 buy the night belonged to the Yankees.
