New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 15
New York Yankees continued their heroic form in their next three match series against the arch rivals Boston Red Sox. Making the most of available opportunities, the Yankees spoiled Boston’s 100th year celebration of Fenway Park with a 6-2 win
in Game 1.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova made quick work of the Red Sox’s batting lineup as eh allowed just two runs in six solid innings. Striking out batters at regular intervals, he ensured the Yankees dictated the terms throughout the contest. Relief pitchers
Chris Wade, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera created all sorts of problems for Bobby Valentine and his men as they combined to pitch three scoreless innings.
Red Sox’s starter Clay Buchholz was unable to control his nerves under pressure as he allowed nine hits and six runs in six innings. Buchholz looked uncomfortable on the mound right from the start of the contest and the Yankees made him pay heavily for his
errors.
“Buchholz's beginnings haven't been good, either. He allowed four runs in each first inning of his other two starts. On Friday, he gave up only one run in the opening inning. But by the time he left after walking Granderson to lead off the seventh, he had
allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks with just two strikeouts”, ESPN.com said.
"You're going to hit home runs every once in a while," Derek Jeter said.
"He's a monster. I don't know when people are going to realize that he's a fantastic young pitcher," Rodriguez said of Nova. "All he knows how to do is win."
Slugger Alex Rodriguez had a decent time on the home run plate as he singled to centre in the first inning to put Yankees on the board. Nick Swisher and Eric Chavez hit back to back home runs to help the Yankees stretch their lead to 3-0 in the second inning.
Rodriguez and Russell Martin belted home runs in the fifth and the sixth to deny the Red Sox any chance of coming back into the contest. For the Red Sox, David Ortiz homered to left centre in the second but his effort was not enough to stop the Yankees.
