New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 20
After taking an embarrassing series loss against the Texas Rangers, the New York Yankees were looking to put things back on track in their next three match series against the Detroit Tigers. Manager Joe Girardi asked his men to regroup and fight back in
Game 1 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY and that is exactly what the Yankees did to claim a vial 1-0 series lead.
Showing great determination, fighting spirits and mental toughness, the Yankees secured a narrow 7-6 win in a thrilling opener on April 27. Starting pitcher Ivan Nova took a beating as he allowed six runs and 11 hits in just over five innings. However, rest
of the pitching rotation brought Yankees back into contest. Relief pitchers Bone Logan, Chris Wade, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera combined to pitch three plus scoreless innings to help the Yankees prevail in a thriller. Closer Rivera pitched the perfect
ninth for his first win of the season.
Tigers’ starter and 2011 American League Most Valuable Player was unable to use his fastballs and sliders effectively as he allowed seven hits and five runs in just six innings. Relief pitcher Brayan Villarreal took the loss after he gave up the tie breaking
single in the bottom of the ninth.
"I'm at third. When Aviles turns around, I couldn't see it," Jeter said. "You really can't see where the ball is. I saw Alex."
"You're going up against one of the best pitchers in the game, and scoring runs against that guy is not easy," " Martin said. "But we as a team battled, we got his pitch count up a little bit and if he made a bad pitch at a certain time, we jumped on it."
For the Tigers, Miguel Cabrera singled to right in the third innings to put his side 2-1 ahead. Slugger Prince Fielder also had a great time on the plate as he singled to left in the third inning but the Yankees were determined to win the game. Alex Rodriguez
and Russell Martin smacked back to back home runs to give their side a much needed win.
