New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 22
Detroit Tigers secured a very crucial 7-5 win in Game 2 of the series and they were in excellent position to wrap up a rare series win at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY. However, the New York Yankees raised their game play to a higher level in the finale
on April 29 to give the home crowd something to cheer about. With their win the Yankees improved their record to 12-9 and claimed the top position on the American League East Division standings table.
Yankees’ starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia played a big part in deciding the outcome of the contest. The big left hander allowed just four hits and two runs in eight sharp innings to lay the foundations of an impressive Yankees’ victory.
Relief pitcher David Robertson pitched the perfect ninth as the Yankee held on to their lead comfortably to take the series. For the Tigers, starter Max Scherzer looked completely out sorts as he allowed seven hits and three runs in just over four innings
to take his third loss of the season. Relief pitchers Luke Putkonen and Collin Balester also struggled to control the flow of runs as they combined to concede three runs in just over three innings.
"We were really fortunate to have a shot in that game the way the game was going," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "In this ballpark, with a lineup like that, normally that doesn't happen. And it won't happen."
“With one out, Granderson connected but Jackson made a long run and leaped where the outfield wall meets a fence that separates fans from the New York bullpen in right-center. The former Yankees minor leaguer who was sent to Detroit in the trade for Granderson
had the ball in his glove but momentum carried the glove into that fence, knocking the ball loose for Granderson's eighth homer”, ESPN.com said.
Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez displayed some top quality hitting skills as they combined to put the Yankees 2-0 ahead in the second innings. Granderson homered to right centre in the fourth inning and Rodriguez continued to put pressure on Tigers’
starting rotation by scoring runs freely.
