New York Yankees 2012 regular season review – Part 25
New York Yankees started their four match series against Kansas City Royals on a very low note. In Game 1 Kauffman Stadium on May 3, the Royals outclassed the Yankees in finer details of the game to claim a crucial psychological advantage.
Royals’ pitching rotation had a great impact on the game as they managed to limit Yankees’ powerful batting lineup to just three runs. Starting pitcher Danny Duffy varied the speeds in an emphatic fashion, allowing just six hits and two runs in a pressure
situation. Striking out six hits and two runs, he ensured his team had complete control over the contest.
Relief pitchers Nate Adcock was unable to live up to the expectations as he gave up two hits and one run in just one of relief. However, the other three relievers Jose Mijares, Aaron Crow and Jonathan Broxton combined to pitch two plus scoreless innings
to ensure the Royals reach home safely.
"At this point, I don't know," New York’s reliever Mariano Rivera said. "At this point, I don't know. Going to have to face this first. It all depends on how the rehab is going to happen."
"That's horrible news," Broxton said. "As many saves as he's been out there and as good an athlete as he is, I just hate for bad news. All I can do is wish him the best."
"You've all seen Mo run around here for what, 40 years?" Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. "You can fall off the curb or down stairs and get hurt."
Yankees’ starter David Phelps had a decent time on the mound as he conceded just two runs in four solid innings but the night belonged to the Royals who held their nerves in tight situation. D.J. Mitchell gave up the tie breaking single in the seventh inning.
Mark Teixeira and Eduardo Nunez also made useful contributions with the bat but on the day their efforts did not prove to be sufficient for the Yankees.
Royals’ Mike Moustakas homered to right centre in the second to put his side on the board. Eric Hosmer also made his presence felt with a single to centre in the third inning.
